The Maryland House of Delegates followed the lead of the state Senate and passed the death penalty repeal bill making Maryland the 18th state to abandon capital punishment, and the 6th state in 6 years to join the abolition club.
Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy signed into law the repeal of Connecticut's death penalty, making his state the 17th, and the 5th in the last 5 years, to do away with capital punishment.
Seventy-year-old Alabama death row prisoner Thomas Arthur has received a stay of execution from a federal court. He had been scheduled to be executed on the evening of 29 March for a murder committed in 1982.
The Governor of the US state of Delaware has commuted the death sentence of Robert Gattis to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, three days before the prisoner was due to be executed after nearly 20 years on death row.
