Detained Student Activist Released!
Canadian-Irish-Iranian citizen Dr Homa Hoodfar, a prominent professor of anthropology, was released on 26 September and flown out of Iran to Oman. She had been detained in solitary confinement in Tehran’s Evin Prison since her arbitrary arrest on 6 June.
Zainab al-Khawaja and her son were released from prison in Bahrain on humanitarian grounds on 31 May. She left Bahrain for Denmark on 7 June after receiving information that she could face new charges if she remained in Bahrain.
Myat Nu Khaing, medical doctor and former election candidate, was released from Insein prison in Yangon, Myanmar’s largest city, on 17 April. She was released as part of a Presidential pardon which saw the release of 83 prisoners, including prisoners of conscience Amnesty International has campaigned for.
The Court of Appeal in Sudan has overturned the sentence of Fardous Al Toum, one of the 10 female Christian students charged with “indecent dress”. She had been sentenced to a fine of 500 Sudanese pounds and 20 lashes.
