(NEW YORK, NY) – Today, Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) announced that its current Chief of Staff, Margaret Huang, has been appointed Interim Executive Director. The announcement comes as Steven Hawkins departs from his role as Executive Director following nearly two and a half years of service.

“Under Steven’s leadership, Amnesty International USA made steady progress toward its mission of protecting human rights both at home and abroad and is a stronger organization today than it was before his tenure. For that, the organization as a whole is very grateful and wishes him only great things in the future,” said Ann Burroughs, AIUSA Board Chair.

Huang enters the role of Interim Executive Director after serving as both AIUSA’s Chief of Campaigns and Programs and, more recently, its Chief of Staff. She brings more than two decades of experience as a human rights defender to the role having previously served as Executive Director of the Rights Working Group and Director of U.S. Program at Global Rights, among other senior roles.

Amnesty International USA’s Board of Directors and Executive Team will begin a process to establish long-term leadership in the new year.
