(NEW YORK, NY) – In response to several gun violence prevention initiatives announced by the White House today, Amnesty International USA’s Senior Campaigner for Gun Violence and Criminal Justice, Jamira Burley, issued the following statement:

“Gun violence in the United States is a human rights crisis and the efforts announced today to reduce it are a step in the right direction. There is still much to be done, however, and Congress, as well as state and local governments, must do their part to reduce the harmful effects of gun violence that impact thousands of Americans each year. We are hopeful that the upcoming White House convening will be an opportunity to bring state and local officials together to develop national and local solutions to gun violence.”

Amnesty International is a Nobel Peace Prize-winning global movement of more than 7 million people who campaign for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all. The organization investigates and exposes abuses, educates and mobilizes the public, and works to protect people wherever justice, freedom, truth and dignity are denied.
