Organization supports transfer provisions in the Defense Authorization Bill

(WASHINGTON D.C.) – Amnesty International urges Senators to support the Guantanamo detainee transfer provisions in the National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal year 2014 (S. 1197) as reported out of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
The proposed transfer provisions would help ensure that each Guantanamo detainee either gets a safe and secure trial or is released if cleared to leave. The provisions should be passed in the bill without amendment.
Section 1031 clarifies the transfer process to other countries. Section 1032 provides for emergency or medical treatment of detainees on the US mainland. Section 1033 provides for trials of detainees on the US mainland.
Under international law, all people have the right to a fair trial and the right to be free from arbitrary detention.
