Talking Points for Phone Calls
Hi, my name is _______ and I'm a constituent of Representative ____________. I'm calling to urge Representative __________ to ensure that 2 key human rights provisions that are currently excluded from the House version of US assistance to Mexico within the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations bill will be included.
Those provisions are:
- establishing an independent human rights monitoring mechanism in Mexico to assess the impact of US supported counter-drug policies on human rights, and
- ensuring that the Mexican military transfers all cases of human rights violations by military personnel to civilian prosecutors in line with international standards.
If the "Merida Initiative" aid package to Mexico does not include those provisions it could allow US tax payer dollars to go to human rights violators. These provisions were passed in the Senate version of the aid package.
Thank you!
