Volunteer Leaders By Role

Use this directory to get connected with Amnesty volunteer leaders! They’re here to answer your questions, provide guidance and keep you up to speed on what’s happening. Each type of leader can help you in different ways. Here’s a breakdown:

Local Group Coordinators

Local groups are community based groups of volunteers who meet regularly to represent AI locally, to conduct community outreach and to work on Action Files, campaigns and AI’s mission in general. As the leaders of their groups, local group coordinators facilitate meetings, share information, and help the group organize its events and activities.

Student Group Coordinators

Student groups are based at universities, colleges and high schools. These groups meet regularly to represent AI at their schools, to conduct outreach, and to work on Urgent Actions, campaigns and AI’s mission in general. Student group coordinators are the leaders of their group and represent the group at their school. Student group coordinators organize group meetings, help the group plan events and activities, keep members informed, and liaise with the faculty advisor and the school

Student Area Coordinators

Student Area Coordinators (SACs) are experienced Amnesty volunteers, who serve as advisors to student groups in a particular regional area. They serve as the link between student groups and the Regional Office and provide valuable assistance and support in organizing meetings, planning activities, recruiting members, locating resources, participating in local and regional events, sharing ideas for human rights activism and connecting groups to the larger organization.

Area Coordinators

Area Coordinators (ACs) are experienced Amnesty volunteers who maintain contact between the Regional Office and Local Groups (and sometimes Student Groups) in a particular geographical area. ACs provide groups with valuable assistance and support in organizing meetings, planning activities, recruiting members, locating resources, sharing ideas for human rights activism, and connecting groups to the larger organization.

Legislative Coordinators

Legislative Coordinators (LC) work in conjunction with Amnesty’s professional legislative advocates in Washington, DC. They work with others such as Area Coordinators, Student Area Coordinators, regional staff, and Amnesty’s membership in a particular state to achieve legislative goals in the United States. LC’s can provide information, advice, and training about working with members of Congress, and about working with other groups in your congressional district. You can contact them for advice about working with the U.S. congress and to answer legislative related questions or concerns.

State Death Penalty Abolition Coordinators

State Death Penalty Abolition Coordinators (SDPAC) keep AI groups and volunteer leaders informed of death penalty news in their state and they mobilizes activists to take action when executions are scheduled and other initiatives require grassroots advocacy. The SDPAC also works with others in the state to coordinate overall statewide strategy and activity. An SDPAC can provide information, advice, and training on working on the issue of the death penalty. They can help you coordinate your group legislative agenda and work with other groups in your congressional district on this issue.
