Year: 2003 Title: INCREASED BOARD - MEMBERSHIP COMMUNICATIONS Resolved:
WHEREAS the activists among Amnesty's membership are a key distinguishing element of our organization; and WHEREAS members of the Board are expected to join AIUSA but are currently not expected to be involved with its membership in any specific way; and WHEREAS to represent the organization, one must understand the sentiments of its membership;
BE IT RESOLVED that regular contact with members of AIUSA be considered a duty of all members of the Board of Directors for the duration of their terms. Where possible, members of the Board will be expected to frequent local and student group meetings and to attend Amnesty events in the community. Members living outside the United States will be expected to find an alternate method of communicating with members. In all cases, members of the Board will be expected to meet and communicate with activists and group members of widely varied degrees of involvement. Implementation: Board Members will work with regional offices to network with local leadership and be encouraged to attend local group meetings. The Board will also propose a variety of means to enhance communication and interaction with members including, but not limited to, such forums as on-line chats, conference calls, and Town Meetings. These ideas will be circulated to membership for feedback prior to implementation Update: Implementation is ongoing.
Several Board members are country specialists and participate actively with the volunteer leadership in this capacity, and many Board members are regular members of local groups (at least two Board members are group coordinators). Board members actively participated in regional conferences, and a mini-town meeting was held at the Southern Regional Conference. Board members were also involved as catalysts, initiating cluster meetings, and organizing events around the national program priorities.
The Board will continue to have an annual town meeting at the AGM, and is beginning discussions about developing other ways of communicating with local and student members throughout the year.
