ResolutionNumber: B1
Year: 2002
Title:   REQUESTING EXPANDED COVERAGE ON AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL ACTIONS ABOUT IRAN

Resolved: Therefore be it resolved that AI continues to produce actions on behalf of all those individuals in Iran who face torture and executions with the same method of research and verification that AI uses in all its work.

Be it further resolved that the IS will increase its resources to be able to cover the vital political and human rights situation in Iran, especially individual victims of human rights violations.

Be it further resolved that AI will provide timely (follow up) information about unresolved cases involving torture and killing of Iranians, which have occurred both inside and outside of that country since the 1980's, provided that the resources are available and this work is within the overall strategy of AI work on Iran.

Implementation: AIUSA will prepare a letter to the IS requesting that AI increase the amount of information on and coverage of conditions in Iran. AIUSA will implement IS actions, working through Government Relations, Country Specialists, and various membership, volunteer, and program structures to advocate on human rights policy issues and on behalf of individuals who have faced torture or execution. AIUSA will provide the IS any information on the human rights developments and conditions in Iran, and developments on the cases of individuals in Iran who face torture and other forms of persecution. Resources: Will integrate into work of Advocacy Director for the Middle East and North Africa.

In response to resolution concerning Iran, AIUSA’s Government Relations, in cooperation with Country Specialists and members of the Board, is drafting a letter to the IS requesting AI to increase its research on human rights conditions in Iran. Because AIUSA’s Advocacy Director for Middle East position was vacant for six months, AIUSA’s capacity to work on Iran was limited. With the an Advocacy Director for the Middle East in place and the Iraq crisis team’s inclusion of Iran as a strategic focus, more AIUSA resources are being devoted to covering Iran.
