Title:   AIUSA PRIVACY POLICY IN REGARDS TO MEMBERSHIP
Resolved:

WHEREAS the current privacy policy of Amnesty International USA currently states “The only circumstance in which Amnesty International may sell, rent, or exchange limited personally identifiable information (such as name and mailing address) with partner organizations is when persons join as dues-paying members online and become and become part of Amnesty’s regular membership list.”

WHEREAS other organizations provide a clear privacy policy and opt-out box on the actual membership form,

RECOGNIZING that the current AIUSA process of providing the opt-out within the mailed membership packet after one becomes a member is both insufficient and unclear,

RECOGNIZING that Amnesty International is one of the most well-respected human rights organizations in the world,

WHEREAS the legitimacy of AIUSA is essential to its non-partisan work as a source of unbiased information, and may be compromised due to its exchanging of information with other “partner organizations” who do not explicitly share the same mandate and strict non-partisan policy as AIUSA,

RECOGNIZING that many potential members, especially students, do not join Amnesty International USA as a result of the current AIUSA privacy policy and opt-out procedures,

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the current AIUSA opt-out procedure be changed to allow for the URL to a privacy policy statement and an opt-out on the original membership form, be it online or a brochure,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the URL to this new privacy policy and opt-out procedure be clear and visible on the membership form and brochure.
