Working to Stop Torture

More on this Web site:

The Campaign to Stop Torture
Amnesty International and other organizations have been campaigning against torture for almost 40 years. Torture is still a daily reality. Torture is used by more than two-thirds of the world's governments. Amnesty International believes that we can and must confront torture and eradicate it. Currently Amnesty International members are mobilized in a Worldwide Campaign to Stop Torture. The Campaign to Stop Torture is a global effort, involving in more than 60 countries.

What Lawyers Can Do

To Prevent Torture

Join the AIUSA Fast Action Stops Torture (FAST) internet alert system, which allows you to take action the moment you hear about torture or the high likelihood that torture will occur.

To Support Torture Survivors

  1. Lobby for the full appropriation for the Torture Victims Relief Act.
  2. Fundraise to support the AIUSA Specific Relief Project for torture survivors. The Project will provide aid to survivors of torture in Sierra Leone.
  3. Volunteer your time at a torture victims treatment center.
To End Impunity for Torturers
  1. Encourage the U.S. to investigate, arrest and prosecute individuals present in the United States accused of torture. Under the UN Torture Convention, the U.S. is obligated to investigate and prosecute individuals who are physically present in the U.S. accused of torture, no matter where the acts were committed.
  2. Pressure the Congress to operationalize the Leahy Law's provision of having the US government assist in the investigation and prosecution of a perpetrator of torture in those countries.
  3. Pressure the administration to sign and ratify the International Criminal Court treaty.
