Host A Viewing Party

AIUSA encourages you to call on your family, friends and neighbors to organize a viewing party of "Lord of War" and educate the public on the issues of arms trafficking. Directed by Andrew Niccol and starring Nicholas Cage, "Lord of War" is a gripping tale that follows a U.S.-based arms dealer as he brokers weapons to various human rights abusers.


Checklist for Hosts
  1. Find a location with enough space for your viewing group. Your house is often sufficient, but libraries, schools and community centers also work for larger gatherings.

  2. Decide on the time that the party will start and end. Leave 2-3 hours free for pre- and post-film discussion.

  3. Invite your guests and publicize the event 1-2 weeks in advance. Email and telephone work best, but flyers might help for larger groups.

  4. Prepare for a discussion by reading through the Lord of War action guide (request the action guide) and other background information.

  5. Different activities like Q&A and trivia games are great for this event.

  6. Possibly show 15 minute Lord of War documentary on the real arms trade, which features Amnesty International (only available on a purchased DVD).

  7. Prepare snacks and ask your guests to bring food and drinks as well.

  8. Always call your guests the day before or the day of to remind them of the event.
Mock Timeline
7:00 PM
Greet everyone and offer light snacks. Share your names and socialize.
7:30 PM
Introduce the film and Amnesty International as a human rights organization dedicated to ending arms trafficking. Ask your guests to look over any discussion questions you may have.
8:00–10:00 PM
Watch the film.
10:00 PM
Discuss the film and conduct your games or activities. Invite participants to get involved by visiting the Amnesty International USA website to learn more about the arms trade. Make sure to inspire activism! Lead discussion of solutions and actions.
