Despite significant progress in the recognition of the human rights of LGBT people, the targeting of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals for police abuse and misconduct remains a persistent and widespread problem in the US. Stonewalled: Police Abuse and Misconduct Against Lesbian, Gay and Transgender People in the US, documents serious patterns of police abuse including incidents amounting to torture and ill-treatment.
This briefing was released to mark International Day Against Homophobia and outlines the horrific day-to-day reality faced by lesbians and gays in Eastern Europe. It profiles a number of brutal attacks against the LGBT community, the inflammatory and homophobic comments made by a range of political and religious leaders, and the state of legislation in 19 countries across Eastern Europe.
Decriminalization is not the whole answer, but it is a key step towards respecting, protecting and fulfilling the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, same -sex practicing and transgender people. This paper explores the different legal approaches to criminalizing homosexuality, including less direct approaches that may not explicitly criminalize same-sex sexual conduct but instead seek to prevent the promotion of homosexuality, protect children, or respond to public health concerns.
