International Justice Day 2006

Justice for the People of Darfur

The conflict in Darfur, Sudan, has led to some of the worst human rights abuses imaginable, including systematic and widespread murder, rape, abduction and displacement. Hundreds of thousands of civilians have been killed by both deliberate and indiscriminate attacks, and over 2.5 million civilians have been displaced.

Despite international outrage over the human rights crisis in Darfur, not a single person responsible for war crimes or crimes against humanity has been brought to justice.

In March 2005, however, the U.N. Security Council passed a historic resolution calling for the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate the crimes committed in Darfur. The ICC is the world’s first, permanent, international judicial body capable of prosecuting individuals accused of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity when national courts are unable or unwilling to do so.

Take Action!

International Justice Day commemorates the day in 1998 on which the Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) was adopted by the international community. Each year, human rights activists around the world use this day to host events and activities to promote international justice, and specifically support for the ICC. This year, AIUSA members and supporters took action July 17 through August 14 to support ongoing work of the ICC in Darfur. | Download the flier (pdf) »
