Expert Commentaries
AIUSA has asked leading experts in the field of international justice to speak to key questions raised by activists in the context of AIUSA’s recent work.
Justice and Peace in Times of Conflict
On July 14, 2008, the ICC's Prosecutor requested a warrant for Sudanese President Omar Hassan Ahmad al Bashir, alleging that Bashir bears criminal responsibility for 10 counts of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in Darfur. In response to the Prosecutor's announcement, AIUSA's international justice team has asked leading international justice experts to discuss the importance of pursuing justice in conflict and post-conflict situations. Read the responses we received from Ariela Blätter, Priscilla Hayner, Richard Goldstone, Betty Bigombe and Sara Darehshori. Learn more.
Justice For Genocide
In April 2007, we asked international justice experts a series of questions to explore some of issues that are at the center of the modern-day struggle to combat genocide. Read the questions and responses from Juan Méndez, Sita Balthazar, Naomi Roht-Arriaza, David M. Crane and David Matas. Learn more.
Fair Trials and Terrorism
The current U.S.-led war on terror has triggered a debate, not only in the U.S. but also around the world, about whether and to what extent the right to a fair trial may be compromised in the name of security. In late 2006, we asked our experts, “Is it really necessary to sacrifice fair trial standards to prosecute terrorism?” Read the responses we received from Bartram Brown, Phillip Carter, Benjamim B. Ferencz, Paul Hoffman, Joseph Margulies, David Weissbrodt and Rick Wilson. Learn more.
