NIGERIA – Patrick Okoroafor

At age 14, Patrick Obinna Okoroafor was arrested in 1995 on charges of kidnapping and robbery, crimes he has maintained he did not commit. When he was only 16, authorities sentenced him to death in violation of international standards that prohibit death sentences for juveniles. Six others (including another juvenile) arrested on related charges were publicly executed after their appeals were denied. Patrick's death sentence was reduced to life in prison on appeal. Despite his desperate situation, Patrick remains hopeful that he will be released. In May 2009, the governor of Imo State reduced Patrick’s sentence to 10 years in prison. However, contrary to usual Nigerian legal practice, authorities have refused to take into account the 14 years he has already been detained.
The conditions at Aba state prison are deplorable. Patrick's asthma attacks are frequent, and his health worsens daily. Authorities reportedly tortured Patrick by pulling out his teeth with pliers and beating him severely.
Patrick Okoroafor recently told Amnesty International, “I am really feeling the impact of your efforts in helping me regain my freedom from prisons.” Messages of support can be sent to both Patrick and his mother to demonstrate worldwide solidarity with them through this trying time.
