When the women left their homes that May morning in 2006, they never imagined the horrific experience that lay ahead of them. During protests by members of a local farmers organization in the town of San Salvador Atenco, federal and local police arrested more than 45 women without explanation. At least 26 of the women reported being physically and sexually assaulted by the police. More than two years later, no police officials have been prosecuted for the physical and sexual violence endured by the women. The women, however, continue to press for justice.
Please send messages of support to the following 11 women who have made their names and stories public in an effort to hold the authorities accountable for the assaults in Atenco: Suhelen Gabriela Cuevas Jaramillo, Claudia Hernández Martínez, Norma Aidé Jiménez Osorio, Bárbara Italia Méndez Moreno, Yolanda Muñoz Diosdada, Maria Patricia Romero Hernández, Georgina Edith Rosales Gutiérrez, Cristina Sánchez Hernández, Mariana Selvas Gómez, Patricia Torres Linares, and Ana Maria Velasco Rodríguez.
You may use the following phrase in Spanish if you wish: Esperamos que se termine la impunidad y que pronto se haga justicia. Abrazos de solidaridad y apoyo! (We hope that impunity ends, and that justice is soon done. Solidarity and support to you!)
