BELARUS – Alyaksandr Kazulin

© Private

Alyaksandr Kazulin, former head of the Belarusian State University, is serving five and a half years in prison on politically motivated charges. Mr. Kazulin was the leader of the Belarusian Socialist Democratic Party when he was detained in March 2006. When thousands of people took to the streets that month to protest what they claimed was a fraudulent presidential election, security forces broke up the demonstrations and detained many protestors.

Alyaksandr Kazulin led a peaceful march to Akrestina prison, where hundreds were being held. When security forces violently disrupted the march, Mr. Kazulin sought to lead the demonstrators to a nearby church to pray. Security officers reportedly beat and detained him. Following an unfair trial, Kazulin was found guilty of "hooliganism" and disturbing the public peace. Amnesty International considers him to be a prisoner of conscience who has been jailed to curtail his lawful political activities.

In February of this year, Alyaksandr Kazulin's wife died following an illness. He was permitted to attend her funeral, then returned to prison. You can help provide him with much needed moral support.
