Global Write-a-thonWOZA leaders, Magodonga Mahlangu and Jenni Williams, make the "Love" sign

Valentine's Day is globally recognized as a day of love, typically marked with flowers, candy, and spending time with those who mean the most to us. For the members of Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA), Valentine's Day will bring no respite from the hardships that they face.

This year, we are joining with WOZA on Valentine's Day to show the world that love can conquer violence and repression.

The Issues

Prisoners of Conscience

"Prisoners of conscience" are men, women or children imprisoned solely for the peaceful expression of their beliefs or because of their race, gender or other personal characteristics. Many have never been charged with a crime. Amnesty seeks the immediate release of all prisoners of conscience.

Freedom of Expression and Media Censorship

“Free speech” isn't so free when it costs you your liberty. In countries around the world, the right to express one's thoughts and beliefs is under assault.

Arbitrary Detention

60 years after the world's governments agreed that no one should be subjected to arbitrary arrest or detention, thousands of people are detained with little or no justification, making them vulnerable to torture, ill-treatment, and "disappearance."

Human Rights Defenders

Human rights defenders risk their jobs, their freedom and their very lives to combat injustice. Young or old, women or men, these courageous individuals need our support. Amnesty International defends the defenders.

Individuals at Risk of Torture

Torture is inflicted upon detainees in a shocking number of the world's nations. Some governments seek to justify their use of this brutal practice, while others don't even bother to try. But torture can never be justified. Torture can never be condoned.
