APPEAL CASE: January 2010
YEMEN
Hisham Bashraheel, newspaper editor, and his sons Muhammad Bashraheel and Hani Bashraheel
Hisham Bashraheel, editor-in-chief of the newspaper al-Ayyam, and his sons–Muhammad Bashraheel and Hani Bashraheel–remain detained after protesting actions taken by authorities against the newspaper. All are at risk of torture or other ill-treatment. The three are being held at the Criminal Investigation Department in Aden. They may be prisoners of conscience, held solely for peacefully exercising their rights to freedom of expression and assembly. The three men had been taking part in a sit-in protest at the newspaper's offices in Aden. Al-Ayyam was established in 1958, and is one of Yemen's largest-circulation daily newspapers. The protest began on 4 January to mark eight months since the authorities effectively banned them from printing and distributing copies of al-Ayyam.
