Two government critics and their neighbor were released on 9 December. Their charges have not been dropped and they have now been placed under house arrest.
Zainab Al-Khawaja was sentenced on 9 December to one year and four months’ imprisonment for “insulting a public servant” and “destroying government property”.
Ahmad Mshaima’ has been sentenced to one year in prison for publicly insulting the King of Bahrain. He is also being tried in another case, charged with illegal gathering.
Rafael Marques de Morais, a well-known journalist and human rights defender in Angola, is facing trial for defamation because he exposed alleged human rights abuses in his country.
