Five activists arrested for taking part in a peaceful protest have been sentenced to between 15-30 days in jail for an administrative offense. One activist was reportedly tortured in custody.
On 6 May, the Taganskii District Court in Moscow quashed an appeal against the authorities’ decision to block the Russian news website Grani.ru.
Umid Yakubov, a refugee from Uzbekistan, was abducted on the street in Moscow on 29 April. It is feared that he has been taken to Uzbekistan, where he is at real risk of torture/ill-treatment.
A draft law, which will make repeated violation of the already restrictive rules governing public assemblies a criminal offence, has been tabled in the Russian parliament.
