Azerbaijani political activist Faraj Karimov and his brother Siraj Karimov have complained of torture in detention to make them “confess” to drug-related crimes.
Political activist Faraj Karimov went missing on 23 July. It was later revealed that police had detained him, but his whereabouts are still not known, and he is at risk of torture.
Eight youth activists from the Azerbaijani civic movement NIDA were sentenced to between six and eight years’ imprisonment on 6 May. The decision of the appeals court is expected on 11 July.
Five activists arrested for taking part in a peaceful protest have been sentenced to between 15-30 days in jail for an administrative offense. One activist was reportedly tortured in custody.
