At least 4 men, a 17-year-old boy, and 9 women have been arrested. They could face a life sentence. Amnesty International considers them to be prisoners of conscience.
The bylaw would criminalize, among other things, same-sex sexual relations and consensual sex outside marriage, punishable by caning.
If signed, a new Criminal Code amendment in Gambia would increase the punishment for "aggravated homosexuality" to life in prison.
A further march has been called by religious groups for Tuesday 6 August in the city of Les Cayes. Two demonstrations against homosexuality have taken place in Haiti since 19 July.
