Urgent Victory! Sudanese Doctor Released Without Charge (Sudan: UA 97.17)

Dr. Mohamed Yasin Abdalla, the chairperson of the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors (CCSD), has been released without charge. He was arrested on 22 April in Khartoum by National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) agents and detained at the office of the NISS Prosecutor of Crimes against the State in Khartoum.

Dr. Mohamed Yasin Abdalla, the chairperson of the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors (CCSD), has been released without charge. He was arrested on 22 April in Khartoum by National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) agents and detained at the office of the NISS Prosecutor of Crimes against the State in Khartoum. Dr. Mohamed Yasin Abdalla, one of the founders and current chairperson of the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors (CCSD), was released without charge on 28 April. He had been arrested on 22 April from his residence in Khartoum and detained at the office of the NISS Prosecutor of Crimes against the State. He was among 28 Sudanese medical doctors who were arrested multiple times and released in October and November 2016 in Sudan. Dr. Mohamed Yasin Abdalla and his colleagues were accused, but not formally charged, of forming an illegal entity and threatening the health system of the country. The doctors had, at the time of their arrests, participated in a doctors’ strike organized by CCSD. The CCSD is an independent doctors’ association that was formed as an alternative to the pro-government Sudanese Doctors Union (SDU). The key demands during the strike were, among other things, the provision of free treatment for those critically ill and for children under five years and provision of suitable accident and emergency medical equipment in 22 hospitals.
