Saturday, September 13, at 3PM STRONG ROOTS: THE LANDLESS WORKERS MOVEMENT IN BRAZILIn Brazil, 1% of the population controls 46% of the agricultural land, leaving nearly five million families landless and poor. To battle this injustice, the Landless Workers Movement (MST) was started in 1985, and has since become the most important social movement in the country. Strong Roots documents the growth of the Landless Workers Movement, the courageous tactics it employs, and the brave peasants at its heart who risk their lives struggling for land and dignity. To Free the Slaves is a documentary that looks at ordinary men and women in four different countries who are determined to bring an end to the suffering of the weak caused by the economic concerns of the powerful. A Canadian couple redeems slaves caught in a brutal civil war in Sudan; Save the Children Canada reunites enslaved young people with their families in the Cote d'Ivorie; in Canada, an ex-prostitute helps young people enslaved in prostitution reintegrate into society.
