"In a White Man's Land" is a direct and intimate film about the experiences and memories of three young African refugees who have to survive in Holland
Young people who flee to Holland without their parents and ask for political asylum are, till they reach the age of 18, allowed to stay in KWE, the Dutch acronym for a small living unit. An ordinary house where they are taught what they need know to live independently. Kim Landstra followed three of these young Africans.
Bernard from Congo Brazzaville has lived in Holland for three months when, still filled with memories of the civil war in his country, he arrives at small living unit in Middleburg. He will share this house with two other African youths. Toni is an ex-child soldier frown Sudan, who fled the army and spent 22 days as a stowaway in the dark hold of a ship. That ship just happened to be on it's way to Holland
Toni is given temporary residence as a minor, but that does not guarantee him permanent residence in Holland. He is appealing against the decision to deny him. Pedro, who also comes from Sudan, is our third protagonist. Not long ago he moved into a bed-sit in Middleburg. The Ministry of Justice has rejected his request for a residence permit because they do not believe he comes from southern Sudan. When he is called up for further questioning, he has to prove he hasn't been lying.
