THE BIG DURIAN

TIMOR LORO-SAE

THE BIG DURIAN

In October 1987 a Malaysian soldier ran amok with an M16 machine gun in a Kuala Lumpur hotel. The incident provoked a citywide panic and triggered rumors of race riots. At the time, official media outlets in Malaysia did not cover the event truthfully, which further fueled rumors surrounding the incident. THE BIG DURIAN addresses the immediate effects the soldier's rampage had on city residents and the wider implications it carried for Malaysian national politics. Through a range of interviews with both real and fictional characters, filmmaker Amir Muhammad offers commentary not only on the events of October 1987, but also on contemporary Malaysian society.
