Tahara
Director: Sara Rashad
Narrative Short. 2005. United States. 17 min. English and Arabic, Subtitled.

TaharaA personal, emotional portrayal of female circumcision, Tahara illustrates the complexities involved in one Egyptian-American mother’s decision to circumcise her daughter Suha. Fluctuating between the pressure from her mother and memories of her own traumatic experience, Amina asks her doctor to perform the illegal procedure on Suha. Although she agrees with the doctor’s reasons for refusal, Amina succumbs to her mother’s pressure and together they take Suha to be circumcised. Faced with the final decision, the harrowing memories of Amina’s circumcision assault her. An intense and emotive piece, Tahara beautifully articulates the contradictions between culture and the individual.
