The whole Mid-Atlantic Regional Office team would like to sincerely thank you for attending this year's Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference. We are ecstatic about the actions, education and the relationship-building which took place over the weekend.
The weeks leading up to the conference were filled with late night planning sessions, phone-banking, and police and permit negotiations. You all sold baked goods and held events to be able to pay for train tickets and gas money, spent hours creating workshops and Idea Fair tables and gave up your entire weekend to gather in the nation's capital, Washington D.C.
These efforts brought together over 300 Amnesty members from every corner of our region. The late nights paid off and our opening panel on the upcoming Sochi Olympics was standing-room only. We shut down downtown DC on a Saturday evening as nearly 200 activists and an 8 foot model drone to marched to the White House to demand answers about the U.S. drone policy. The hard work put into the Ideas Fair resulted in hundreds of signed petitions, Write 4 Rights sign-ups, and photo actions.
An incredible piece of the conference was how your stories were weaved throughout the weekend- people felt empowered to tell friends and strangers alike why they choose to be a human rights activist. These stories of individuals reminded me of how Amnesty International was founded- on the stories of individuals being prosecuted for who they were or what they believed, and the stories of Amnesty members standing together to change the world.
This December, we can continue this momentum and join with hundreds of thousands of others for 2013 Write 4 Rights happening December 2- 17! You can sign up now and shine a light on human rights abuses from Belarus to Egypt to the USA.
To pledge to write for rights and to download your toolkit visit www.amnesyusa.org/WriteForRights. When you do, you'll join hundreds of thousands of people standing up for human rights and, with enough action, we will see the release of prisoners of conscience.
Also, to help us make the next regional conferences the best that they can be, please fill out the Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference Evaluation Form.
