Stop Violence Against Women Week

As part of Amnesty's Stop Violence Against Women Week, the Brown University Amnesty International Student Group held a series of events.

March 8 7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
International Women's Day
Speaker: Onyeka Obasi

"Violence Against Women in Conflict / Post Conflict Settings: Sierra Leone Experience"

This presentation looked at sexual violence against women and girls during the civil war and recommendations to different National and International bodies. Video clips of testimonies of survivors of sexual violence against women and girls during and after the war in Sierra Leone were also be shown.

Speaker: Charlotte Lapsansky

"Mainstreaming Visions for Women's Human Rights"

Charlotte Lapsansky of Breakthrough discussed how a culturally relevant human rights framework can strengthen organizing against domestic violence both at home and abroad. Music videos produced by Breakthrough illustrated how pop culture can be used to promote women's human rights and raise awareness about domestic violence.


March 10 6:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.
"Her Real World" Movie Marathon

Featuring: Defending Our Lives, Sin City Diary, Dreamworlds, and El hombre cuando es hombre (A man, when he's a man)

Movies were shown depicting violence against women across all cultures, along with interspersed discussions facilitated by the Domestic Abuse Advocacy Program and the Coalition Against Relationship Abuse.


March 11 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Speaker: Dr. Mini Murthy

"Women's Health is a Human Right"

Dr. Murthy spoke about how women's health should be actively protected, promoted and supported through health promotion and education, disease prevention and other health services. In spite of various laws and covenants being adopted by many countries women are facing discrimination and injustice in all societies and are often denied the opportunity to enjoy good health - which is a basic human right.
