Day of the Dead

October 2003
Washington, DC

A solemn procession mourning hundreds of young women murdered and "disappeared" since 1993 in Ciudad Juárez and Chihuahua, Mexico was held on November 1, the traditional Mexican "Day of the Dead" in Washington, DC. Participants met in front of the Organization of American States, and passed by the offices of the Interamerican Commission on Human Rights on their way to the Mexican Embassy. Each person wore a red heart bearing the name of a victim and carried a picture of a victim. The event was co-sponsored by AIUSA Women's Human Rights Program, Mexico Solidarity Network, Sol y Soul and Women in Black. Similar events took place simultaneously in hundreds of cities around the world.
