MARO Concludes Another Successful Human Rights Film Festival
Thousands of movie goers attended the 2nd Annual DC Human Rights Film Festival which concluded this past Saturday. The event was organized by the Mid-Atlantic Regional Office and co-sponsored by the National Geographic Society with key support from AIUSA Film Festival and Artist Relations Programs.
- The 8 featured films and documentaries on some of the most pressing human rights issues of our times including:
- Catch A Fire-US Premier
- Ground Truth
- The World According to Sesame Street
- All About Dafur
- Black Gold
- Golden Venture
- Mario's Story
- Salvador (The 20th Special Anniversary Screening)
We had 3 sold out shows in a 400 seat theatre, and many who attended heard from panel of experts, participated in spirited Q&As, and took actions on human rights issues covered by the films. The entire cast of "Catch A Fire" including Director Philip Noyce and Patrick Chamusso, the ANC freedom fighter whose story was depicted in the movie were in the house for the opening night film which included a grand reception.
The event was covered by major area newspapers including Washington Post, Baltimore Sun, Washington Time and the local NBC affiliate WRC Channel 4.
Much thanks to Lia Lindsey, MARO field organizer for coordinating the event; Alessandra Gallo, volunteer coordinator of AIUSA Films Festival Program for doing much good work securing an inspiring line up of films; and the entire cross continental bunch of interns who took care of logistical needs. We look forward to building on this successful event next year.
