It's simple. Or it should be simple: human rights are inalienable. Every human being has them simply because they are alive. But are there gray areas within this very black and white concept? Amnesty Internationalemphatically, unequivocally says "no." "No" to those who suggest that the U.S. can claim "exceptionality" to human rights in certain situations, and "no" to governments worldwide who have used the "war on terror" to justify human rights abuses. Amnesty says "no" to those who think that even a single living being whose human rights are being abused is not worth fighting for. Amnesty says "no" to the death penalty in all circumstances. Amnesty says "no" to those who argue that due process and enforcement of the law can shift depending on your race, ethnicity, economic status, sexuality, gender, or religion. Amnesty says "no" to the proposition that we must leave behind some rights to secure others. There are no exceptions. There are no excuses. And in Austin, Amnesty International activists from all over the country will reaffirm our dedication to this principle. No individual can redefine the concept of universal human rights for political gain. No business or corporation will be allowed to violate people's rights to increase their profits. No country will be excepted from responsibility for upholding the Universal Declaration of Human Rights or the Geneva Convention. Not a single one. No excuses. No exceptions. No Human Rights Left Behind.
