Student Activists Participate!
In the past several years, over 30-50% of Annual General Meeting (AGM) participants have been students. The AGM is a prime opportunity to meet other activists across the country and develop your skills as a human rights activist. Take part in many of the weekend's inspiring and educational events. This is your opportunity to boost the vitality, leadership and participation of student activists at the national level.
There will be a Student Activist Caucus Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. on April 17, 2004. You will also have opportunities to meet with the AIUSA Board Chair, Executive Director, volunteer leaders, and program staff throughout the weekend.
During the AGM, students are encouraged to stop by and enjoy the Student Activist Lounge. This space will allow students to meet, exchange ideas, and network. The National Campus Advisory Committee will be hosting events in the lounge and will be available to answer your questions.
NGO Career Forum
Learn about career opportunities in the social justice movement. This forum is designed for students and members to gather information about career and internship opportunities in the non-profit sector. A panel and forum will run on Friday afternoon, April 16, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm and is open to all members.
Things to consider as you plan a trip to the AGM:
- Plan ahead! Airfares and registration fees are lower when you pre-register. The registration deadline is March 12, 2004. You won't have to stand in a long line if you've pre-registered and you get your own AGM packet and program. More on budget travel
- Consider linking student groups. There may be several students or student groups in your area who are thinking of going and who are looking for others to travel with. Contact your regional office and get in touch with other groups.
- Raise money. Organizing a fundraising event to send your group to the AGM is another way to make your registration and travel costs more easily affordable. More on DIVINE (Free-Trade) Chocolate Fundraiser. See how much money your group can raise creatively and tell us about it. agm2004@aiusa.org
- Special group discounts: The more students that register together as a group before the pre-registration deadline, the lower your registration fee will be. For every 5 students registered, the sixth one gets in free.
BE INVOLVED
- Arrive Friday morning. Students are vital players in AI's work and we'd like you to be well represented the entire weekend! Friday events include workshops on Fighting Discrimination and Strengthening Organizational Diversity; human rights priority areas; tours of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum a non-profit human rights career forum, the speech of a former child soldier from Uganda at the Welcoming Plenary, and a reception where you can meet guests from other Amnesty International sections.
- Register and Evaluate! Registered guests receive a complete packet of materials, continental breakfast and coffee breaks, giveaways, and pre-conference preparatory materials. We need to know more about who you are and what ideas you have for planning future conferences.
- Vote! Students make up 30-50% of AGM Attendees. As members of AIUSA, you have voting power and can help shape how the organization shapes our work on human rights abuses in the future. Learn more about your participation in the Resolutions Process.
