2004 Annual General Meeting

Overview

The 2004 Amnesty International USA
Annual General Meeting (AGM)

April 16-18, 2004, Brooklyn, New York

VIGILANT JUSTICE:
SECURING HUMAN RIGHTS IN TODAY'S WORLD

"Human rights activists continue to face new challenges. The war on Iraq has dominated the international agenda, diverting attention from other vital human rights issue. "Forgotten" conflicts have taken a heavy toll on human rights and human lives - including Côte d'Ivoire, Colombia, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Chechnya and Nepal. Protecting the rights of the 'forgotten victims' is the biggest challenge we face today.

Governments have spent billions to strengthen national security and the "war on terror". Yet for millions of people, the real sources of insecurity are corruption, repression, discrimination, extreme poverty and preventable diseases. Human rights defenders celebrated some successes during 2002, such as the establishment of the International Criminal Court, which marked a breakthrough in the struggle against impunity for the worst crimes known to humanity."

--Amnesty International, Annual Report 2003

Seeking "Vigilant Justice," the Annual General Meeting 2004 will call for the effective implementation of all provisions contained in international human rights treaties. Plenary speakers and panelists will draw attention to the international and domestic consequences of the War on Terror as well as other crises around the world. AGM programming will highlight national priority setting, the Stop Violence Against Women Campaign, the Campaign Against Discrimination, and the upcoming AI Crisis Alert in Haiti. There will be an emphasis on member caucusing, networking, and participation in the resolutions process.
