The 2003 AIUSA Annual General Meeting

When Amnesty International was founded in 1961, it was nearly impossible to imagine many of the landmark events that would follow in the evolution of the human rights movement. Who could have imagined the fall of the Berlin Wall, which opened the possibility for political expression and social change? Who could have envisioned the arrest of Augusto Pinochet, the creation of a permanent International Criminal Court, and the growth and development of institutions of accountability? Who would have believed that treaties outlawing genocide, torture, and discrimination would be adopted by nations around the world?

Without imagination, could anyone have envisioned that one day an international movement of more than a million people would be actively working to end grave human rights abuses around the world and to promote freedom of conscience, expression, and freedom from discrimination?

Imagination creates the possibility for realization. As human rights activists, we work each day to build and carry forward a vision for creating the kind of world we believe in-- a world without the death penalty or torture, a world in which the recognition that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights is universal. The challenges we face are clear. But what are the concrete solutions? What has the global human rights movement accomplished to date? What strategies have and have not been effective? How can each of us really bring about change?

The AIUSA Annual General Meeting will be held April 4-6, 2003 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This conference will focus on human rights strategies--what it will take at the local, national, and international level to create the world we imagine as human rights activists. During this three-day conference, internationally renowned speakers, panelists, activist members and staff of AIUSA will explore concrete strategies and models for organizing activism.

It will be a stimulating weekend with activist and youth leadership meetings, networking sessions and special events, preparations for the International Council Meeting (the biennial conference of Amnesty International sections), and policy discussions for AIUSA members.
