Student Activist Participate!

In the past several years, over 50% of Annual General Meeting (AGM) participants have been students. The AGM is a prime opportunity to meet other activists across the country and develop your skills as a human rights activist. You don't have to be a member now to take part in many of the weekend's inspiring and educational events. This is your opportunity to boost the vitality, leadership and participation of student activists at the national level.

STUDENT ACTIVIST CAUCUS

Calling all Students - Don’t miss YOUR biggest meeting of the year! The student caucus helps you get the most from your AGM experience. Come develop strategies, exchange information, discuss ideas, ask questions, and network. Food will be served!

The student caucus is organized by the National Campus Advisory Committee – a group of students representing each Amnesty region and focused on increasing student participation throughout the organization. It will be held Saturday evening from 5:45-7:45 pm in the gym of the YWCA (at 509 Seneca at 5th Avenue) just a few blocks from the hotel.

STUDENT ACTIVIST LOUNGE

This lounge in the State Room (second floor of the Renaissance Madison Hotel)) is created by students, for students. Come hang out with fellow student activists to exchange ideas, get information, share experiences and unwind. Hosted by the National Campus Advisory Committee, this cozy convergence space is the ultimate way to get connected. Drop in anytime - food and drinks will be served during Breaks.

Things to consider as you plan a trip to the AGM:
  • Plan ahead! Air fares and registration fees are lower when you pre-register. The registration deadline is March 12, 2001. You won't have to stand in a long line if you've pre-registered and you get your own AGM packet and program. More on budget travel
  • Consider linking student groups. There may be several students or student groups in your area who are thinking of going and who are looking for others to travel with. Contact your regional office and get in touch with other groups.
  • Raise money. Organizing a fundraising event to send your group to the AGM is another way to make your registration and travel costs more easily affordable. More on DIVINE (Fair-Trade) Chocolate Fundraiser. See how much money your group can raise creatively and tell us about it.
  • Special group discounts: The more students that register together as a group before the pre-registration deadline, the lower your registration fee will be. For every 5 students registered, the sixth one gets in free.

BE INVOLVED
  • Arrive early. Students are vital players in AI's work and we want you well represented the entire weekend! Friday events include the Opening Keynote Address and an AIUSA Open House Reception that will introduce you to many of the diverse programs offered by AIUSA.
  • Register and Evaluate! Registered guests receive a complete packet of materials, continental breakfast and coffee breaks, giveaway bags, and pre-conference preparatory materials. We need to know more about who you are and what ideas you have for planning future conferences.
  • Vote! Students make up 50(+)% of AGM Attendees. As members of AIUSA, you have voting power and can help shape how the organization shapes our work on human rights abuses in the future. Learn more about your participation in the Resolutions Process.

AGM 2003 will take place April 3-7, 2003 at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
