FACE TO FACE: Confronting Torture in the 21st Century

Voting at the AGM
Amnesty International is a grass roots organization with a system in place to take an active part in how AI functions. AIUSA's members have the power to affect policy decision-making at regional, national, and international levels through the AIUSA Resolutions process. The purpose of a resolution is to make a statement either directing a change in policy, a change in the method for instituting policy, or a change in Amnesty's organizational structure. A resolution can be as simple as asking staff to clarify current procedures, or as complex as requesting a change in AI's mandate.

The Resolutions Process
In the resolutions process, a member or members of the organization formally presents an idea before the membership in the form of a resolution. This idea is then discussed, changed, and voted on during Working Parties and Voting Plenaries at regional conferences and then again at the Annual General Meeting. Resolutions are annually submitted by September 1 to the Membership Mobilization Office at broads@aiusa.org. A National Resolutions Committee aiusa-resol@aiusa.org is in place to help members develop resolutions, educate members, and drive the resolutions process.

    Who can Vote?
Votes on resolutions during Working Parties and the resolutions plenary can be cast by individual members or representatives of local or student groups.

    Qualify to Vote
To vote as an individual member, you must either:

    1. Have paid membership dues between January 1, 2000 and March 1, 2001. To join or renew your membership, please send dues of $25 ($15 student/limited income) to AIUSA-MEMBERSHIP SERVICES, 322 Eighth Avenue, New York, NY 10001.
    2. Have completed a dues waiver by March 1, 2001 if you cannot afford to pay dues. To request a waiver, contact Jeff Zick, jzick@aiusa.org at the address above, fax to 212.627.1451, or call 212.807.8400.

Each local and student group receives one vote to be exercised by a designated individual at the AGM. Group voting authorization forms will be enclosed in the February 2001 Monthly Mailing.
