AGM WaterFire Action
WaterFire Action: AGM Focus Action on CEDAW Ratification

A thrilling action calling for US CEDAW ratification and supporting the work of women human rights defenders will open the events of the 2000 AGM. Our AIUSA Local Group 49 has been been successful in introducing a resolution supporting US ratification of CEDAW in the Rhode Island House of Representatives (scroll to House Resolution 7100). Their efforts will culminate in a public action planned with the first lighting this year of the celebrated Providence "WaterFire." The WaterFire is a fascinating multi-media installation that sets the waters of the Providence River ablaze with ritual fires at sunset, this time in a specially designed ceremony evoking the Amnesty candle.

Join AI activists, influential legislators, and the Providence community as we march together carrying placards with the names and faces of women human rights defenders from around the world to nearby Waterplace Park for the WaterFire ceremony. In the shadow of the magnificent Rhode Island State House, we will call for US action on CEDAW and light our candles in recognition of women human rights defenders still at risk (click here for more on the extraordinary cases to be highlighted in the action).

The flames of the WaterFire, mystical music from the worlds of our defenders, and the voices of the Rhode Island Feminist Chorus will add to a unique celebration of the human spirit.
