AGM WaterFire Action
The AGM Planning Committee is committed to highlighting student activism at the 2000 AGM. Along with the National Field Program, local Student Area Coordinators and student groups in Rhode Island and Boston, the Committee is working to boost the visibility and effectiveness of the Student Activist Caucus and "Create Space" (a designated meeting room where students can spontaneously caucus throughout the weekend).

STUDENT ACTIVIST CAUCUS

Come to the AGM Friday afternoon March 10 before 4:00 p.m. to participate in the exciting CEDAW WaterFire Action and join other students on Friday night from 8:00 - 10:00 pm for the Student Activist Caucus.

Share, learn and network with AI student activists who bring a wealth of experience and ideas from their student groups. The National Field Program is developing an agenda that will include everyone in this learning and sharing session and will be facilitated by Amnesty student activists. Come exchange useful information and ideas that will help build your student group. Food served from 7:30 - 8:00 pm! Questions/comments, contact Lisa Sock of the National Field Program at lsock@aiusa.org.

STUDENT ACTIVIST NIGHT AT AlternativeSpace220

Immediately following the Student Activist Caucus, AIUSA students in Rhode Island will be hosting an event off-site at nearby AS220. AS220, or Alternative Space 220, is a popular local forum and home for the arts. Its mission is to provide an open and permanent venue for artists of all types and calibers. With a funky art gallery, stage and coffe bar, it also serves as a networking and community-building center.

AS220 is a perfect venue for a space away from the AGM for Amnesty activists to meet and organize with other young people in Providence and to provide a forum for building the human rights culture among local and regional youth. It will be a relaxed evening with performance by local artists, food, drink, conversations, and a chance to step up to the "activist mike" and let people know what you've been doing to stop human rights abuses.

Special guest Najat Bouda of Algeria will be on hand to provide an international perspective. Najat is 23 years old and is currently President and one of the founding members of Rassemblement Action Jeunesse (RAJ), an Algerian non-sectarian youth organization dedicated to mobilizing young people to tackle social problems and address the human rights situation in Algeria. RAJ has addressed many issues relating to the Algerian family code, including an international conference on women and the Algerian crisis in Paris in 1994. This charismatic young woman has been working tirelessly to shed light on the plight of Algerian women and youth and how they are effected by the carnage taking place there. RAJ continues to collaborate with the International Secretariat of Amnesty International and other human rights organizations on many issues.

Come to AIUSA Student Activist Night at AS220 (from 10 pm to 1 am Friday, March 10) to meet old friends and make great new ones! Check out this spot on the AGM web site for coming information and performing artists.

STUDENT ACTIVIST CREATE SPACE

The Create Space at the AGM site will showcase national student activism and be available for impromptu meetings and/or informal social get-togethers.
