AGM 1999 Recap AGM 1999 Introduction Human Rights Here and Now! AGM Preview Event Summary |
Amnesty International USA 1999 Annual General Meeting April 16-18, 1999 Minneapolis, Minnesota Human Rights Here and Now! Educating for the Future The AIUSA Annual General Meeting, or AGM, attracts nearly five hundred Amnesty members and human rights activists from across the United States and internationally. The meeting presents important speakers, workshops, panels, sales of Amnesty publications and merchandise, the national resolutions voting plenary, and an ideas fair. AIUSA activists and staff gather in a different city each year to organize, motivate, and educate one another in the ongoing work to combat human rights violations around the world. This year's meeting, titled Human Rights Here and Now! Educating for the Future, promises to be an especially fruitful one in light of Amnesty International's current world-wide campaign against human rights violations in the United States and the remarkable concentration of human rights advocacy in the Twin Cities. The dates of the meeting held in Minneapolis this year are April 16-18, 1999. The AGM will be taking place at the Radisson Metrodome Hotel, located on the campus of the University of Minnesota and close to many prominent national and international human rights organizations including the Center for Victims of Torture, the Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights, and the Resource Center for the Americas. This year, special focuses are being offered, including an organized bus tour of these prominent human rights organizations and a education fair featuring speakers, workshops, and training materials. Those interested in either or both of these special focus event should pre-register using the forms provided in this year's AGM Brochure. The AGM Planning Committee is scheduling a series of panels and calling for panel topics. Panels should addresses one or more of the six focuses of AI's campaign against human rights violations in the USA, should contain a strong educational component, incorporate a component on women's human rights and gender perspectives, and promote both domestic and international perspectives. Submissions should include contact information for the person submitting the proposal, the proposed name of the panel, the focus or purpose of the panel, suggested participants for the panel, and suggestions for funding other than the AGM budget. Panel proposals should be submitted to David Yu, AGM Coordinator, in the National Office by January 14th, 1999. The AGM Planning Committee will select the panels during the week of January 18th. Notification of the results will be communicated no later than the week of January 25th. Votes on resolutions during Working Parties and the AGM Resolutions Voting Plenary can be cast by individual members or representatives of local or student groups. Each local and student group receives one vote to be exercised by a designated individual at the AGM. Group voting authorization forms will be enclosed in the February Monthly Mailing. For more voting information, contact the AGM Planning Office. The ideas fair is an important opportunity to share accomplishments and ideas with other Amnesty members from throughout the country.
