  Human Rights Campaigner

New York, NY

We have a great opportunity for an experienced human rights campaigner to work on the Demand Dignity Campaign, Amnesty International's flagship campaign on poverty and human rights. Candidates must be experienced campaigners or organizers. Your experience should include a track record of developing creative campaign strategies that effectively mobilize diverse constituencies to achieve real human rights/social justice victories. Candidates must be able to multi task in a fast moving work environment. Successful candidates will play a role in implementing a new Amnesty International campaign, with an initial emphasis on maternal mortality, the focus of a forthcoming AIUSA report. Other areas of focus include corporate accountability and human rights abuse in slum areas.

QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor's degree or equivalent plus four to six years professional experience in campaigning or community organizing. Experience in and/or demonstrated interest in issues related to poverty and human rights. Career interest in and strong commitment to human rights and campaigning. Highly developed leadership skills.   Regional Director, Western Region

San Francisco, CA

We currently offer an exciting leadership opportunity for an experienced senior manager with a passion for social justice. The Regional Director for the Western Region is a member of AIUSA's Leadership Team, reporting to the Deputy Executive Director for Organizing, Membership & Campaigns. Based in San Francisco, the Regional Director is Amnesty's spokesperson to the membership and to the public in thirteen Western U.S. States. S/he is responsible for bringing Amnesty's message and methods to the region, and for directing the force of regional membership to AIUSA's priority campaigns.

S/he directs a staff of six, responsible for organizing, lobbying, fundraising, and membership recruitment and development.

The ideal candidate is a persuasive speaker who knows how to motivate people individually, in large groups and through the media. S/he understands the power of activism and is ready for a personal challenge.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree or equivalent and 10+ years of experience in activism or advocacy, including planning and managing actions and producing results. Successful experience working with youth and groups from diverse backgrounds is preferred. Spanish is a plus.

  Senior Major Gifts Associate

New York, NY

The Senior Major Gifts Associate supports the donor cultivation and stewardship efforts of the Major Gifts Unit by planning and executing a range of small scale events in select regions across the country (up to a total of 12 events per year), as well as AIUSA's annual Leadership Council meeting. Events may include house parties as well as donor receptions associated with high profile speaking engagements or campaign events. Work closely with other departments including Campaigns and Research and Policy to identify opportunities for donor cultivation around program and membership events as appropriate. Recruit, train and supervise Unit interns. Manage a select portfolio of $5,000 donors and prospects. Provide administrative support for Unit mailings and other activities as required.

Cultivation Events: Develop and ensure adherence to a strategic annual events calendar that supports the donor cultivation and stewardship goals of the Major Gifts Unit. Ensure integration of events schedule with broader donor communications calendar. Working with regionally based Major Gift Officers, plan and execute all aspects of donor cultivation events, including budgeting, securing venues, speakers, and supporting materials as well as overseeing the design, printing and distribution of invitations and coordinating catering. Coordinate participation of Communications and Entertainment Relations Units as appropriate. Identify opportunities for donor cultivation at select events coordinated by other AIUSA departments including film screenings, lectures, expert briefings, receptions for released prisoners etc.

Annual Leadership Council Meeting: Spearhead planning and execution of annual meeting of AIUSA's leadership level donors, including budgeting, program development, supporting materials, invitations, catering etc. Coordinate with other AIUSA staff as appropriate.

AIUSA's Annual General Meeting: Work with Major Gift Officers and Researcher to identify and invite prospective major donors in the area to attend the Leadership Council meeting. Coordinate event evaluation and follow-up.

Portfolio Management/Donor Relations: Cultivate and solicit a portfolio of approximately fifty $5,000 donors and prospects, primarily through phone, e-mail, and mail contact. Interface with major donors and their representatives as required at special events and through phone inquiries.

Administrative Support: Provide additional support to the Major Gifts Associate for Operations as required. This may include but is not limited to assistance with data management, gift processing and mass mailings. Serve as liaison with outside vendors including caterers and printers. Process invoices related to events.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent preferred. Must be a team player with good interpersonal and communication skills. Must have superior organization skills and an eye for detail. Previous project and event management experience required, experience in a professional Development department preferred.

  Office Administrator, Western Regionl Office

San Francisco, CA

AIUSA seeks an Office Administrator (OA) for its Western Regional Office in San Francisco, CA. The OA maintains the office on a day to day basis, supports the Regional Director on budget management and accounting, recruits and trains interns, assists with event organizing, provides general servicing to local groups, and provides daily assistance to the Regional Director.

The OA is responsible for the daily maintenance of the office including maintaining vendor relationships, liaising with building management, providing technical support to regional staff, database management, and ensuring office equipment is in good working order. The OA is also responsible for either handling phone calls or training interns or volunteers to answer the phone and effectively troubleshoot with activists and members of the public. S/he supports the regional director on day to day management of the budget and is responsible for maintaining regional accounting of all expenses. This includes preparing reimbursement checks for regional staff, MasterCard and vendor bills, and managing incoming checks for deposits. The OA is in charge of managing intern recruitment, training and their day to day management, working with regional staff to ensure that interns are working on useful projects and abide by basic office rules. In addition, the OA pitches in to help with event organizing, which includes assisting with mass mailings, ordering food and other details. S/he will also support the Field Organizers with general member servicing, including providing student and local groups with requested materials and directing questions to the appropriate staff. The OA also provides direct support to the Regional Director, helping to manage the Director's schedule and assist with other functions.

QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree plus 2-4 years of experience in a similar office environment. Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite, Access, and basic small business accounting software, such as Quickbooks, preferred. Experience with editing and proofreading, ability to troubleshoot problems with basic office equipment, and attention to detail desired.

Advocacy Director for International Affairs
Emphasis on the Middle East & North Africa

Washington, DC

Amnesty International seeks an Advocacy Director to advance the U.S. foreign policy aspects of AIUSA’s human rights agenda, particularly as pertain to the Middle East and North Africa. Based in Washington, D.C., Advocacy Directors work as a team to make human rights a priority in US foreign policy, raising these issues directly with the U.S. Congress and Presidential administration, and serving as spokespersons to the media. The Advocacy Directors also work on various thematic human rights issues that are global in scope.

Additional responsibilities include: collaborating with volunteer experts to develop and implement a strategy for effective advocacy; tracking, monitoring and analyzing USG and Congressional policies and actions; informing and facilitating activism by AIUSA members; supporting the work of relevant AIUSA working groups and developing strategic outreach to diverse communities.

Qualifications include:

  • Significant human rights experience and a demonstrated commitment to human rights,
  • Knowledge of the executive and legislative branches of the USG and 5+ years of professional experience working with or lobbying the USG,
  • Good knowledge of the Middle East and North Africa, in particular of issues involving human rights, and of pertinent national and international stakeholders and decision makers,
  • Experience with grassroots organizations and demonstrated success working in and building coalitions,
  • Excellent communications skills (strong writing and verbal), including public speaking skills,

  Production Associate

The Production Associate plays an important role in helping Amnesty International achieve real human rights victories. Part of an exciting, fun, and dynamic web team, the Associate builds and tests emails, web pages and simple forms to support AIUSA's online fundraising program and priority campaigns. The Associate works closely with others on the New Media team and reports to the Managing Director.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree or equivalent and 1-3 years of relevant work experience. Expert in HTML, Proficiency in Dreamweaver and Photoshop required.   National Youth Program Coordinator

New York, NY

The National Youth Program Coordinator ("Program Coordinator") is responsible for working with key members and staff to design and implement AIUSA's National Youth Program. The goal of this program is to build, strengthen, and expand the role of young leaders (ages 13-30) in AIUSA's volunteer base on key human rights issues. The Program Coordinator will implement a program to fully engage AIUSA's young leaders and activists on key human rights issues by:

  • Strengthening, building and growing the student groups, networks and other existing youth member based structures; particularly supporting the connection and transition from youth based groups to local groups or professional networks to encourage continued activism beyond high school or college;
  • Supporting the testing of initiatives for alternative youth networks (i.e.- young professional networks, alumni networks, city-wide youth networks ) by developing common programming opportunities with campaigns and regions for these groups;
  • Creating vehicles to sustain and transition a youth leader during the lifetime of their membership, particularly post college graduates and young workers who may be mobile from city to city;
  • Leading the coordination of two national youth mobilizations in the United States- 1-International Week of Student Action and 2-National Week of Student Action;
  • Supporting leadership training for youth so they can deepen and grow their activism over time;
  • Implementing communication tools for youth leaders that keep them informed of engaging and essential information of the organization (e.g.: quarterly online newsletter; youth center -website page management, print materials, new and inventive media outreach).

Taking direction from the leadership at AIUSA, the FO plays a critical role in the development and implementation of regional responses to new or emergency human rights crises. Working in collaboration with Campaign and External Affairs staff, s/he organizes fundraising, public awareness, and campaign events, and serves as AIUSA's public representative for the assigned states. The FO also serves on internal inter-departmental campaign working groups, and is a key participant in the development and implementation of long-term regional campaign strategies.

QUALIFICATIONS: A BA plus at least five years of organizing, campaigns, field, political and member based experience, including working with diverse communities. Teambuilding, organizing, and excellent presentation skills are required. The ideal candidate is a strong collaborator, who can work with volunteer activists and members, as well as other AIUSA staff toward our shared goals. S/he must have excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking, training and facilitating. The ability to speak a second language is desired. S/he must be able to travel up to 25% of the time and work on weekends and evenings as needed.

  Managing Director, Campaigns

The Managing Director of AIUSA's Campaigns Unit is responsible for developing, strategizing and implementing global and national thematic and country-specific campaigns. Qualified candidate is responsible for the national coordination of the campaigns' strategy including communications, grassroots mobilization, outreach, and US government advocacy. He/ she works closely with the global Amnesty movement in linking US campaign strategy and goals with the International Secretariat and other AI sections.

Ideal candidate manages the Campaigns Unit, which includes over a dozen professional level staff that lead AIUSA's priority campaigns work on: the war on terror/anti-torture; death penalty abolition; poverty and human rights; immigrant rights; individuals at risk and; crisis response work. The staff of the unit is based both in NY and DC and the Managing Director will need to travel often between these two offices.

This position is a key leadership position within AIUSA and reports directly to the Deputy Executive Director for Organizing, Membership and Campaigns. While there is a preference for the position to be in based in our US headquarters in New York, consideration will be given for an ideal candidate to house it in our Washington, DC office.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree or equivalent plus seven to ten years' successful experience with grassroots organizing; strategy development at the local, national and international levels; and creating and managing high profile and effective campaigns.   Deputy Director, Major Gifts

Reporting to the Director of Major Gifts, the Deputy Director will provide high level strategic management for an experienced team of Major Gift Officers based in Boston, New York, DC, Atlanta and Chicago. As a senior member of the Major Gifts Unit, the Deputy Director will lead the team to develop increasingly effective cultivation and solicitation strategies including an integrated communication plan that encompasses electronic and printed media. S/he will manage and supervise the development of funding proposals and other written materials including acknowledgements and other standard correspondence and coordinate donor field visits. The Deputy Director will also manage his/her own portfolio of 50-75 major donors and be expected to meet an annual revenue goal and assist the Director of Major Gifts in the overall management of the unit.

QUALIFICATIONS: BA or equivalent, plus additional related college courses or professional training. Minimum of four years of work experience in development, in particular major gifts, with demonstrated track record of success. Previous managerial and supervisory experience required.
