MEETING EDUCATION STANDARDS

Discussing and debating issues of human rights is a natural vehicle for teaching skills that meet state education standards :

STIMULATING STUDENTS

Incorporating human rights issues, such as dignity, respect and freedom, draws students to the coursework on an emotional as well as intellectual level. It helps them relate to the material and make important connections between events of other times and places and their own lives.

SUPPORTING TEACHERS

Rights in Sight has been created to encourage the integration of human rights issues into existing school curricula. Our goal is to provide teachers with support through :

MAKING RIGHTS RELEVANT

Universal rights, such as freedom of expression and equality, are intrinsically relevant to a host of core subjects, and a Rights in Sight perspective encourages critical thinking and stimulates debate.

Science
What do you think the word "relativity" would mean to us today if Einstein had not been free to express his revolutionary ideas?

History
In the United States, the first voting rights were given to white, male landowners. Why do you think women and minorities were excluded?

Literature
One of the articles in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says that everyone has the right to marry whomever they choose. Was this a common principle in Romeo and Juliet's day? Do you think that everyone around the world accepts this principle today?

Civics
Everyone has the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty. Do you think that there are valid reasons for the government to suspend this right since 9/11?
