Commemorating both Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday and the 40th anniversary of his acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize, Mrs. Coretta Scott King and Martin King III hosted the gala performance and Atlanta premiere of Speak Truth to Power: Voices from Beyond the Dark on Friday, January 14th at Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church. Additionally Nobel Prize Laureates were in Atlanta to honor Dr. King on this very special occasion.
Robin Wright Penn, Martin Sheen, Alfre Woodard, Kenny Leon and Fisher Stevens read from Ariel Dorfman's play, Speak Truth to Power: Voices from Beyond the Dark at the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. Martin Sheen, Sean Penn, Robin Wright Penn, Woody Harrelson, Alfre Woodard and other Hollywood luminaries portrayed the individual human rights defenders featured in Speak Truth to Power including: Vaclav Havel of the Czech Republic and Baltasar Garzon of Spain, as well as Nobel Price laureates His Holiness, The Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Elie Wiesel, Oscar Arias, Rigoberta Menchu, Jose Ramos-Horta, Bobby Muller, and Wangari Maathai.

An intimate gathering for cast and sponsors preceded the event and a post-play reception at the MLK Jr. National Historic Site Museum follows, where Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Eddie Adams' Speak Truth exhibition is on display through March 15th.

On January 14, Karen Robinson moderated two workshops for high school students with defenders Van Jones, Harry Wu, Ka Hsaw Wa, Marina Pisklakova and Sister Dianna Ortiz(all featured in Kerry Kennedy's Book Speak Truth to Power) in Freedom Hall of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic. Also on January 14th, a symposium moderated by Kerry Kennedy took place from 1:00 - 3:00 pm at the Carter Center of Emory University with Nobel Peace Prize laureates Jose Ramos-Horta, Rigoberta Menchu and Bobby Muller.
