Amnesty International Activists Rally for Release of Prisoners of Conscience in Indonesia
(Washington) -- Amnesty International USA will hold a rally on behalf of its “prisoners of conscience” Filep Karma and Yusak Pakage, who are imprisoned in Indonesia. Activists will gather at the Indonesian Embassy on Tuesday, December 1, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. to commemorate the fifth anniversary of their arrest and to demand their immediate and unconditional release.
Karma and Pakage were arrested in December 2004 and are serving long prison sentences for participating in a peaceful flag-raising ceremony, commemorating the 1962 declaration of Papuan independence. Amnesty International stands in solidarity with Karma and Pakage, supporting the right to freedom of expression including the right to peacefully advocate independence or other political solutions.
