(Washington) -- Amnesty International members and other activists will be burning up the phone lines during the week of February 17 to urge their senators to fully investigate the U.S. government's abuses in the war on terror and to hold accountable those responsible. The human rights organization is calling on President Barak Obama and the U.S. Congress to create an independent and impartial commission to examine the use of torture, indefinite detention, secret renditions and other illegal U.S. counterterrorism policies.
Activists may either call the U.S. Senate general line at 202.224.3121 to reach their senator's office or they may go to Amnesty International USA's website, www.amnestyusa.org/call4accountability, for information and to be directly connected to the appropriate senator's office.
The congressional call-in week is part of Amnesty International's 100 Days Action, a project to ensure that President Obama takes concrete steps in the first 100 days of his administration to demonstrate a commitment to human rights and the rule of law.
