In 2008 the world moved even closer towards abolition of the death penalty. In December, the United Nations General Assembly (UN GA) adopted by a large majority a second resolution calling for a moratorium with a view to abolish the death penalty. This resolution consolidates three decades of steady progress towards complete abolition of the death penalty.

Since 1976, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that executions could resumeafter a four year moratorium, more than 1,050 people have been executed in thiscountry. Approximately 3,370 men and women remain on death row throughoutthe United States. The goal of this curriculum guide is to encourage students toquestion the ethics behind the death penalty, which the United States SupremeCourt called “cruel and unusual punishment” in its 1972 decision of the Furman vs.Georgia case, due to the arbitrary nature of its application.
