Activity #1: U.N. Peacekeepers Necessary to Protect Civilians in Darfur Region
In a classroom environment, have students brainstorm creative ways they could combat sexual violence in conflict by proposing an event or activity that their school or group could participate in. The proposal should include possible logistics for the event (location, intended audience, and budget). Students should also identify how the event would raise awareness about the human rights of women and girls, and how they would promote their event. Some possible examples include holding a film screening, hosting a reception or party with relevant speakers, or organizing a march. Make sure to emphasize that their event idea should be original, while still being realistic and feasible.
Activity #2: Profile a Human Rights Defender
Have students profile an activist (or group of activists) trying to end violence against women in a country of their choice. Have them write a few paragraphs about who the group or person is and what specific steps for change they have taken to combat gender-based violence. Some suggestions of groups to look into are UNIFEM, Madre, Survivors United and Women for Women.
