India Human Rights

Human Rights Concerns

India's political system is among the most mature in the world, but it is juxtaposed by real human rights concerns that are quite severe in nature. Among the gravest, is the continued impunity from prosecution of the hundreds of right-wing Hindus that took part in pogroms against the minority Muslim community in Gujarat.

Besides Gujarat, there are ongoing concerns of unlawful killings and other human rights violations in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir as well as incredible levels of violence by both security forces and armed opposition groups in the northeastern states of Assam, Tripura and Manipur. Torture, meanwhile, is endemic to all of the police forces in the country and there is a lack of will to prevent torture.

Thus, Amnesty International remains concerned about the impunity, unlawful killings and endemic torture that culminate to make India a grave concern for AI and the human rights community.

Demand that UCC/Dow Face Justice for the Bhopal Disaster
Twenty-two years on in Bhopal, India the lives of thousands are still seriously affected as a result of the exposure to the MIC gas. Since then, many have died or have developed chronic and debilitating illnesses. On January 6, 2005 Dow Chemical was summoned before an Indian criminal court seeking to bring to justice those responsible for the 1984 gas leak. Write to Mr Andrew Liveris, CEO of Dow Chemical. You can base your letters on the sample below. » More actions
